Crafting a Graphics Package

The NHRL, National Havoc Robot League, is the world's most competitive and accessible combat robotics league. Builders design and construct remote-controlled machines and fight them to the death...well until they stop working. "Death" is a bit over-the-top, but regardless, it sure is a lot of fun!

The league came to HUGO asking for a full graphics package ahead of two final events of the season. We were more than happy to oblige. What came out of the workshop looked like how the events feel: action, action, action. We received one very simple instruction: “We never stop moving.” From lower thirds to fullscreen graphics to transitions, and show opens, and sound design, the sizzle reel says it all.

Design, Design, Design

When developing a Graphics Package, we believe it's all about trying out as many options as possible. You never really know what's going to stick until you try. So, for a lot of the in-show graphics elements, we tried many different combinations, from color here and shapes there, until we landed on something that felt fun and effective.

Sound & Motion

As it was made very clear: these robots never stop, the action never stops, so the animation and sound design should have the same kind of energy. Ask and you shall receive. From Opens to Bumps to Transitions and everything in between, these animations were designed to take you into the frenzied chaotic mind of robots with one purpose: destroy the opposition.
